On June 6, 2019, a man was found stabbed to death in the parking lot of a northeast Raleigh park.

On Thursday, the Raleigh Police Department announced it has a supsect in custody.

Roger Shane Riddick, 49, was charged Thursday with the murder of Jorge Zelaya, 26, Raleigh police said in a statement. A man walking his dog at Brentwood Park in northeast Raleigh called 911 when he found Zelaya’s body in a nearby parking lot, The News & Observer reported in 2019.

At the time, detectives interviewed nearby residents and those connected to Zelaya, but could not find a suspect, Raleigh police said Thursday. On Feb. 25, 2026, detectives sent evidence to the N.C. State Crime Laboratory for additional testing using technology that was not available at the time of the incident.

Investigators got results from the lab on May 6, identifying a positive match with Riddick. The Wake County District Attorney’s office received the case and approved charges against Riddick.

Riddick is being held without bond, court records show.
