Two people have died after a crash involving an airport shuttle near Raleigh-Durham International Airport on Saturday hospitalized four people.
Raleigh police on Saturday afternoon responded to a crash in the 9400 block of Glenwood Avenue involving two vehicles, one of which was a Fast Park shuttle, The News & Observer previously reported. Police said Monday that Scott D. Christofferson, 48, and Jennifer M. Christofferson, 44, died after sustaining life-threatening injuries in the collision.
The pair were married and were the parents of a child who was also on board the shuttle and injured in the crash, police said. The juvenile is still at the hospital recovering from their injuries.
The driver of the shuttle was not injured, according to police.
Police have now charged the driver of the other vehicle, 70-year-old Barry Hayes, in the crash. Police said preliminary details indicate the shuttle was traveling west on Lumley Road toward the airport and had the right of way to enter the intersection. Hayes, driving a white Nissan Altima, was traveling south down the ramp from Glenwood Avenue and ran the red light.
Police say Hayes struck the shuttle and caused the bus to roll and flip.
Hayes, who police said is still recovering from injuries sustained in the crash, now faces eight charges including involuntary manslaughter, death by vehicle, reckless driving and driving without an operator’s license.
Fast Park is a private park-and-ride company with 15 locations, including in Raleigh. RDU said Saturday that no RDU vehicles were involved in the crash.
