Moore County Schools will be closed for students through at least Thursday, but intends “to resume normal operations on Friday,” the school district announced Wednesday.
Thursday will be an optional work day for staff, and employees should “follow inclement weather guidelines” if they wish to take leave.
The district said it would make an official announcement about its operation status for Friday by 4 p.m. Thursday.
Schools have been closed to students and staff since Monday due to ongoing, widespread power outages in the county.
At one point, more than 40,000 people in Moore County were without power after two Duke Energy electrical substations in the county were intentionally damaged in an attack Saturday evening.
Power has been largely restored Wednesday, with fewer than 1,000 customers without power as of 4 p.m. Duke Energy estimates power will be restored to most customers by by 11:59 p.m. Wednesday.
Once power is restored, the school district said Tuesday, it will require 24 hours of notice before it can welcome students back.
“This is due to the impact the outage has had on child nutrition services; specifically our school cafeteria freezers and the need to move food supplies to sites that have electricity. Additionally, the outage continues to impact traffic patterns that make it unsafe to operate school buses,” the district said.
“We continue to work closely with our partners at Duke Energy and appreciate your patience and support as we work through this situation.”
