Over 42,000 pounds of beef recalled after testing finds possibly deadly E. coli strain
A nationwide recall of about 42,922 pounds of ground beef products was announced Saturday night after USDA testing found E. coli O157:H7, one of the most potentially deadly E. coli strains.
Of the seven products in the recall by Lakeside Refrigerated Services, six were made with organic and/or grass-fed beef that was sold under the Marketside Butcher or Thomas Farms brands. None are past their expiration date.
Along with bloody diarrhea, stomach cramps and dehydration that can last a week, E. coli O157:H7 is one of the strains that can bring hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This form of kidney failure, more likely to strike children under 5 and senior citizens, puts the fatal edge on E. coli.
