Shooting on Louisiana college campus during homecoming event leaves one dead, cops say
One person was killed and others were injured in a shooting on a Louisiana college campus Sunday, officials said.
The Grambling State University Police Department said the shooting happened Sunday morning on the quad area of the campus while a homecoming event was taking place in McCall Dining Center. People attending the event sheltered in place following the shooting until police gave the all clear.
One victim of the shooting, who was not a student, died from their injuries, officials said. Several others were injured, including a student who was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The campus has since been cleared to resume normal operations, officials said. But all homecoming events scheduled for Sunday and classes scheduled for Monday have been canceled.
Counseling services are also available to students and employees.
“GramFam, now is the time to be Unapologetically Unified as we rally to comfort one another after this morning’s incident,” the university wrote on Facebook.
Officials said Louisiana State Police are investigating the shooting and that anyone with information should call the agency at 318-345-0000 or the Grambling State University Police Department at 318-374-2222.
No other information about the incident had been released as of Sunday afternoon.
The university is located in Grambling, which is in northern Louisiana, about 65 miles east of Shreveport.
More than 5,400 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled at the university as of fall 2020-2021, according to the school.
