A Maryland mom had no intention of playing the lottery when she stopped at a local liquor store.

“The cashier there at Waldorf Liquors pointed out this new ticket and the urge hit me,” she told lottery officials, according to an Oct. 24 news release.

Once an everyday player, the 34-year-old decided to take a chance on a $10 Blizzard Bucks ticket, a new holiday-themed scratch-off game, she told officials. Her first ticket won her $15, so she used a portion of her winnings to buy a second ticket.

That’s when she got lucky.

“When I saw the $100,000, I couldn’t believe it. I stayed calm, but all I was thinking was ‘Oh, my God,’” the woman told officials.

She managed to stay calm while she was in the store, but when she got outside the winner couldn’t contain her excitement.

“My husband was waiting in the car,” she told officials. “He thought I’d gone crazy!”

While the mom of two has some experience winning — she’s won $10,000 on two separate occasions — nothing compares to this prize, she told officials.

The couple, who live about 15 miles southeast of Washington, D.C. in Prince George’s County, plan to use their winnings to buy a new car and to save for their childrens’ educational expenses, they told lottery officials.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
