A man was running errands with his wife in Maryland when he stopped and bought a winning lottery ticket.

Now he’s $88,000 richer.

The auto technician stopped at Parkview Liquors in Cumberland and bought four lottery games, the Maryland Lottery said in a June 10 news release.

He started to play the games as the couple went home, lottery officials said. But he didn’t win anything until he got to the $10 Electric 8s instant ticket.

“I told my wife, ‘Well, this is all or nothing,’” the man told lottery officials.

He scratched the last ticket and learned he won $88,000, making him the first winner of the top prize, lottery officials said.

“I thought, ‘This can’t be!’” he told lottery officials.

The lucky lottery winner has some plans for his prize money. He told lottery officials he would like to pay off his car loan, work on home improvements, go on a vacation and “boost his savings account.”

Cumberland is about a 140-mile drive northwest from Baltimore.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
