A woman’s ex-boyfriend climbed through her window and bashed a man’s head with a baseball bat, Minnesota police said.

Bryant Darrel Bramstedt, 20, called 911 and said he was told by his ex-girlfriend to come through the apartment window Sept. 3 and that the 25-year-old woman needed help because a man was hurting her, according to court documents.

Bramstedt told St. Paul police that he picked up a baseball bat in the room when the 35-year-old man “pounced” and hit him in the head two to three times, a probable cause statement said.

The woman told police a different story, according to the statement.

She said she was sleeping in bed next to her friend, the 35-year-old man, when she woke up to see her ex-boyfriend in her room, according to police.

Bramstedt was not invited to her apartment, the woman told police.

He picked up a bat sitting next to the woman’s bed and hit both of them in the head, court documents said.

Officers later found the other man “hunched over in a large pool of blood,” according to court documents.

“Blood was dripping from his face,” police said. “He was groaning and moaning but was unable to speak. His face was swollen to the point of being unrecognizable.”

The man was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to court documents. Officers said he had multiple skull fractures along with brain bleeding and swelling.

Bramstedt was charged with first-degree assault with great bodily harm, second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, and two counts of burglary, according to court records. His bond was set at $500,000.

McClatchy News was unable to obtain contact information for the man’s attorney.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 9.
