A woman got big news when she called her niece to double-check her lottery ticket in Maryland.

She was a $50,000 winner.

The woman picked up some scratch-off games after work in the community of California, the Maryland Lottery said in a Nov. 6 news release.

She bought six Gold Bar Bingo games for $5 a piece, the lottery office said.

Then she went home, got into her pajamas and started scratching away.

One of the tickets appeared to be a winner, so she called her niece to take a second look. She sent a photo of the ticket and was told she had won the top prize.

“I didn’t believe it,” she told the lottery office. “I’m sitting here and I am still in disbelief.”

Now, she plans to use the prize money on a vacation and to “make the holidays extra special this year.”

The community of California is about a 65-mile drive southeast from Washington, D.C.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
