Lottery player ‘took a chance on’ random South Carolina ticket. It paid off big time
A lottery player “took a chance on” a random South Carolina scratch-off ticket — and it paid off big time.
That’s because the ticket the woman bought was worth $200,000, the S.C. Education Lottery said Nov. 7 in a news release.
The woman hit the jackpot after she stopped for a drink at a Sunoco in Summerville, a roughly 25-mile drive northwest from Charleston. While at the gas station, she randomly tried her luck on a $5 ticket for the Clemson Jackpot game.
“I’m not a Tiger fan,” the woman said, referring to the Clemson University-themed game.
But before you think she’s taken a side on South Carolina’s big college rivalry, she told lottery officials: “No, I’m not a Gamecock fan either.”
The lucky player, who wasn’t identified in the news release, beat 1-in-520,000 odds to score the Clemson game’s top prize. She kept $139,000 after taxes, lottery spokesperson Holli Armstrong told McClatchy News in an email.
“I am happy,” the lucky winner said.
It’s not the first time a lottery player’s random decision has made them richer. In Maryland, a man won big after he randomly made picks on a ticket machine, McClatchy News reported in February.
