‘How many zeros is this?’ Woman wins huge Powerball prize in Michigan
A Michigan woman took a chance and played the Powerball, and it paid off for her in a big way.
Kathryn Peltier, 55, played the Powerball for the Sept. 1 drawing, according to a Sept. 17 news release from the Michigan Lottery Connect.
“I saw the Powerball jackpot was over $1 billion and thought to myself: ‘You can’t win if you don’t play,’ so I logged into my Lottery account and bought a few tickets,” she told lottery officials.
Peltier had no clue she would match four winning numbers and the Powerball. She also purchased the Powerplay, which tripled her prize.
“The next morning, I was checking my email when I got to work and saw an email from the Michigan Lottery about claiming my prize. I assumed it was a small win, so it was amazing when I logged in and saw $150,000 in my account,” the Oakland County resident said.
Peltier said she had to double-check what she was reading to make sure it was correct.
“I showed my coworker my account balance and asked: ‘How many zeros is this?’ to confirm I was reading it right, then I called my husband to tell him the news. This prize is going to change our life,” she told lottery officials.
Peltier said she will use the money to pay off her home and vehicles and will save the rest.
Oakland County is about a 30-mile drive northwest from Detroit.
