Start your week in #ncpol #ncga with our latest Under the Dome politics podcast. I’m Kyle Ingram, a politics reporter and this week’s podcast host.

For the week of Aug. 7, 2023, we’ve got two segments covering state and national politics. First up is a look into the North Carolina Speaker of the House position, which longtime Speaker Tim Moore recently said he does not plan to run for again.

Luciana Perez Uribe Guinassi, one of my colleagues on the politics team, joins me to talk about what could be next for Moore, who has remained one of the most significant players in North Carolina politics for nearly 10 years. Some have speculated about a run for Congress, but Moore’s top advisers say it’s too early to decide. Lobbying could also be on the table, given Moore’s contacts and lengthy experience — but it’s anyone’s guess where he ends up once his term ends in 2025.

We also discuss who might take the gavel once Moore relinquishes it. House Majority Leader John Bell and House Rules Chair Rep. Destin Hall have both emerged as candidates and top budget negotiator Rep. Jason Saine may also be considering a run.

Headliner of the week

After the break, I’m joined by our DC Correspondent Danielle Battaglia to discuss former President Donald Trump’s latest criminal indictment.

We discuss how the new charges fit into Trump’s growing list of legal troubles as well as which North Carolina figures have emerged as key players in the drama. Battaglia discusses the role of Mark Meadows, former North Carolina congressman and Trump’s final chief of staff, who may be cooperating with authorities in their investigation.

Sidney Powell, a North Carolina lawyer, is thought to be one of the co-conspirators listed in the latest indictment and Cleta Mitchell, a Pinehurst attorney who organized the Trump legal team, may show up in a future indictment. (Powell has not been charged with any crime.)

For Headliner of the Week, Guinassi highlights The News & Observer’s spectacular feature on Glenwood South, a Raleigh party street. Stay tuned to the end of the episode when Battaglia and I share our own headliners, including a newsworthy view from her DC apartment and my first trip to a Raleigh barbecue institution.
