Under the Dome podcast: New congressional and legislative maps on the horizon
Start your week in #ncpol #ncga with our latest Under the Dome politics podcast. Dawn Vaughan here, your News & Observer Capitol bureau chief and podcast host.
In the latest episode, for the week of Oct. 9, 2023, I’m joined by my politics team colleague Kyle Ingram and investigative reporter Tyler Dukes to talk about redistricting and what it means. This week the General Assembly plans to hold veto overrides on Tuesday and an oversight hearing on Wednesday. By the end of the week, the public might get to see some of the new maps drawn by lawmakers for the 2024 General Assembly and congressional races. There are 14 congressional districts and 170 legislative districts, both House and Senate.
Longtime podcast listeners might recall that Dukes led a special miniseries podcast about gerrymandering in 2021. We talk about what’s changed since then, and what people can expect from the upcoming redrawing of district maps.
Headliner of the Week
Stay tuned after the break for our picks for Headliner of the Week. They include U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry and House Speaker Tim Moore’s response to the ousting of U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy; the rollout of eCourts; and the local election in Chapel Hill.
