Start your week in North Carolina politics with our latest Under the Dome podcast, for the week of July 22, 2024. Dawn Vaughan here, your podcast host and The News & Observer’s Capitol bureau chief. On this episode, I’m joined by Raleigh politics and government reporter Anna Roman.

Down ballot, past the presidential, governor, attorney general, judicial and General Assembly races, are your local government races. Raleigh, where many in North Carolina politics work or live, will get its first new mayor in five years.

Candidate filing is now closed for the Raleigh elections for mayor and city council, and Roman tells listeners who’s running to lead Raleigh. The crowded field also includes a former member of the Council of State and Senate, Janet Cowell, who is running for mayor. Listen to hear the full list of candidates for each race.

Plus we talk about changes to downtown Raleigh and issues at play in the city election. Roman fills us in on the latest on the future of Red Hat Amphitheater and Dix Park, among other projects.

Headliner of the Week

Stayed tuned to the end for our picks for Headliner of the Week. My choice is the major national news of former President Donald Trump’s attempted assassination and the Republican National Convention.

Roman’s is about downtown Raleigh and the cool new grassy dinosaurs that are new additions to downtown.
