Start your week in North Carolina politics with our latest Under the Dome podcast, for the week of Sept. 9, 2024. Dawn Vaughan here, your podcast host and The News & Observer’s Capitol bureau chief. On this episode, I’m joined by my politics team colleagues Avi Bajpai and Kyle Ingram.

This past week actually included action at the General Assembly, and the return of the mini-budget. We lead off with audio of Republican House Speaker Tim Moore talking about the compromise deal of the mini-budget and his conversations with Senate leader Phil Berger and House Rules Committee Chair Destin Hall. Hall is relevant to the conversation, and the deal, because he is Moore’s heir apparent to become the next speaker, and the champion of a significant element of the mini-budget: requiring sheriffs to cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, known as ICE.

We talk about how things played out in the House and Senate and what that might mean for the rest of the legislative sessions and the new session in 2025.

Headliner of the Week

After the break, Ingram brings us all up to speed about ballot changes because of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who it benefits and who will be paying for it. Spoiler alert: tax money is involved.

Stay tuned to the end for our picks for Headliner of the Week. I talk about the legislature’s tribute to the late Rep. Kelly Alexander. Ingram talks about lawsuits and Bajpai talks about nature and government buildings.
