Days before Super Tuesday, Amy Klobuchar adds staff, events in North Carolina

Updated Feb. 25 with developments.

The countdown to Super Tuesday is on, and Democratic presidential primary candidates are trying to get more attention, and support, in North Carolina — one of the biggest states to vote on March 3.

Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s campaign has announced four events in North Carolina. She will be at two “grassroots” events — a campaign news release didn’t provide details — in Greensboro and Raleigh on Thursday before she goes to a Fox News Channel town hall in Raleigh that evening. The campaign also announced new staffing for the state ahead of the primary.

Klobuchar has enough support to be on the Democratic presidential candidate debate stage, but in the latest poll of North Carolina voters she still falls behind frontrunner Sen. Bernie Sanders as well as former Vice President Joe Biden, former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg and Sen. Elizabeth Warren. She polled close to former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

On Saturday night, she’ll attend the Blue NC event in Charlotte.

Blue NC is a state Democratic Party event with Gov. Roy Cooper, Chief Justice Cheri Beasley, Secretary of State Elaine Marshall and party chair Wayne Goodwin, who is also running for state insurance commissioner. The event will be at Hilton Charlotte University Place, 8629 J.M. Keynes Drive. Tickets start at $65.

New Klobuchar campaign staff in North Carolina include state director Maggie Barlow, senior advisor Kimberly Reynolds, political director Mary Lee, communications director Austin Cook and field director Seth Barnes.

Barlow was previously director of the North Carolina House Democratic Caucus and finance director of the Virginia Democratic Party. Reynolds was executive director of the North Carolina Democratic Party from 2015 until 2019 and chief of staff for former Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton.

Buttigieg, Sanders visit this week

Sanders will be in Goldsboro on Wednesday for an Ash Wednesday service at the church of Rev. William Barber, who leads Repairers of the Breach and founded Moral Mondays.

On Thursday, Sanders will be at Winston-Salem State University for a get-out-the-vote rally.

And on Sunday, Buttigieg, who made his own visit earlier in campaign season to Barber’s church, will be in Raleigh for a get-out-the-vote rally.
