In August, Wendell Mayor Virginia Gray decided against ordering a mask mandate like some other Wake County towns. Do you agree with this decision?
Yes, the current board as a whole decided to go against the mask mandate. I appreciate being given the choice to wear or not wear a mask in a business. I believe it should be a decision made by the individual business to enforce it. Even if the business doesn’t enforce wearing a mask, you always have the choice to wear one anyway. That’s your rights.
What is Wendell doing right, and wrong, on managing growth?
I am enthusiastic about how our town is growing. Its very exciting to see all the interest in eastern Wake County. As we grow, and as builders and bigger businesses look to invest in Wendell we need to be cautious. Recently the town has voted “yes” to annex and build on several pieces of land.
Our town’s population is going to double in the next 5 years. We need to get ahead of the growth. We need to know how all this is going to affect our roads, schools, parks, neighbors, and businesses. We have Transportation Plan in place that looks good. I’m ready for that to get started in the spring.
There will be a lot of changes with roads in Wendell really soon. We have been waiting for this. Growth is great! We need it in order for our community to continue to thrive and be a place where residents want to live and play. Managing our growth is important. Smart growth is key!
If elected, what would your two or three priorities be during your first year in office?
If elected, I would like to see more focus put into bringing new businesses to our town. An incentive for building owners to revitalize their investments, and drawing business in to fill the vacancies. I’d like to see some more options considered for our Parks and Recreation system. If elected, I would like to ask more questions when having to consider what type of homes will be built. I would imagine that the first year in office would be filled with learning and adjusting to the new role.
What unique skills or life perspective would you bring to city governance?
I believe that I would be an incredible asset to this town. I have served on countless committees and boards in the past 19 years. I continue to be an active participant in this community. I live in Wendell. I own a business in downtown. My husband and I are raising a family here. I have a lot invested and I am excited to have the opportunity to serve Wendell on a higher level.
My very unique skill is that I can listen and understand all sides of a situation and make my own decisions. I do not have any political agenda, and I am not affiliated with any particular group. I truly want what is best for the citizens of Wendell.
