Name: Elizabeth Parent

Political Party: Democratic

Age on election night: 28

Website: www.ElizabethParent.com

Occupation: Mom and host at a local restaurant

Education: Some college, Bellevue College

Have you run for elected office before? No

Civic involvement: Advocating for the public on various issues at Fuquay-Varina Town Hall, president of MOM’s Club of Fuquay-Varina/Holly Springs, board member of Artists Alliance of the Triangle.

School test scores dropped during the COVID-19 pandemic. What should North Carolina do to improve student performance?

Properly fund our public schools, raise pay for all public school staff, and allow teachers the freedom to teach each child based on their needs.

What do you want to happen in North Carolina if Roe v. Wade is overturned?

Fight for it to be reinstated. Access to safe abortion is a necessity.

What should North Carolina do to reduce violent crime?

Education is prevention. Properly funding for our public schools is one way, expanding educational opportunities for our first responders is another, expanding funding for gun safety educational opportunities is another.

Should medical marijuana be legalized in North Carolina?

Yes, I believe we would see the same benefits many other states have seen through the legalization of marijuana and the tax revenue it provides.

What should the state’s minimum wage be? What policies would you support to help struggling North Carolinians?

$15 an hour. I would support legislation to help North Carolinians afford child care costs, advocate for a state loan option for a capped income mortgage to get first-time home buyers and our first responders, school staff into homes, and pass legislation to allow ADUs state-wide.

Should North Carolina expand Medicaid, and how?

Absolutely, I support Medicaid expansion and with a little more fine tuning I believe Medicare4All would benefit all North Carolinians.

Is there an area where you disagree with your party? Why?

I’ve been told that supporting the Second Amendment, supporting farmers, and limiting eminent domain is un-democratic, but I believe otherwise. I maintain my open door policy and will cross the aisle in order to advocate for my district and our state.

What are your top issues? Pick up to three.

Education; poverty and income inequality; and debt and spending.
