What would be your top priority if elected?

My top priority is improving our public education system and other essential public services to secure a better future for all North Carolinians. I’m also committed to addressing the tax burden and rising cost of living while making critical infrastructure investments to support the rapid growth in our area.

By percentage, what raises should state employees, school staff and teachers receive in the next state budget?

A raise of 10-15% is essential to address wage stagnation, reduce vacancies, and combat the impact of inflation. Beyond that, we must create clear pathways for career advancement and ensure that salaries keep pace with market trends. Competitive compensation for our public servants is crucial for a thriving, functional society.

What legislation would you support to improve Triangle transportation, housing or infrastructure? Please be specific.

NC Senate District 13 is experiencing explosive growth, and unfortunately, much of the residential developers aren’t paying their fair share, placing an undue burden on current residents. As property taxes continue to rise, homeowners and renters face increasing financial strain. I support bipartisan legislation that ensures new developments contribute fairly to infrastructure costs, protecting existing communities from being overburdened by the costs of growth.

Do you think the legislature should fund about $500 million for private school vouchers through the Opportunity Scholarship program? Why or why not?

Not as it stands. I’m deeply concerned about the allocation of public funds without strict accountability and transparency. Furthermore, I’m troubled by the inclination of some to abandon our public schools in favor of privatization, where profit often takes precedence over quality education. Well-funded, well-managed public schools are the cornerstone of a self-governing society.

Is there an issue on which you disagree with your party? What is your position on that issue?

Yes, I believe we need to make substantial investments in our public institutions, particularly our schools, to serve the common good. The fact that the Leandro case even had to be brought forward is a blemish on our state’s reputation and a reflection of our collective failure to invest in the next generation. These investments must go beyond just infrastructure; we need to address the human resource challenges demonstrated by high vacancy rates in critical positions.
