20 North Carolinians fly to NYC for a chance to become 2020’s first new millionaire

A North Carolinian could be the first new millionaire of 2020.

Twenty lottery players from North Carolina were scheduled to go to New York City on Sunday for the chance to win a $1 million prize right after midnight on New Year’s Day, according to a release from the North Carolina Education Lottery.

Those going won the trip in August and September as part of the lottery’s Powerball New Year’s Rockin’ Eve second-chance drawing, according to the lottery.

Along with Powerball players from across the country, they’ll watch “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest” from a gala at the Crowne Plaza Hotel.

Then, after the Times Square ball drop at midnight, there will be a special drawing to make one of the players the first person to win a $1 million prize in 2020.

“We’ll be cheering on our players as we count down to 2020,” Mark Michalko, executive director of the N.C. Education Lottery, said in the release. “We’d love to see someone from North Carolina become the first millionaire of the New Year.”
