Man shoots suspect trying to break into his car along Blue Ridge Parkway, officials say

A car owner shot a person accused of trying to break into his vehicle along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Western North Carolina, officials say.

The suspect was rushed to Mission Hospital in Asheville and needed surgery, officials told multiple news outlets on Friday.

The National Park Service says the car owner called 911 at about 3 a.m. Friday to report the attempted break-in and shooting, according to Smoky Mountain News.

The park service told WYFF the incident happened near the Blue Ridge Parkway’s mile marker 364.

The area is close to the Craggy Gardens, where “gnarled, twisted trees, fog, and wind” dot the landscape, according to the Blue Ridge Parkway website. About 10 miles north is Mount Mitchell, the highest point in the eastern United States.

The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an investigation into the shooting, WLOS reported.

The sheriff’s department and the park service on Friday didn’t immediately respond to McClatchy News’ requests for comment.
