Bodies of 5-year-old, father found after they disappeared on NC river, officials say

The bodies of a 5-year-old and his father were found a week after the pair went missing on a North Carolina fishing trip, officials said.

On Monday afternoon, crews located the body of the missing child in the Neuse River, according to officials. The search for the father continued until his body was found Wednesday.

The boy was on a dock when he fell into the Neuse River on March 24, according to Wayne County. His 38-year-old dad reportedly jumped in the water in an attempt to rescue him.

“A witness on the bank of the river called 911 and a boater in the river attempted to help save the two but was unsuccessful,” authorities said in a news release.

Officials said the father and son — identified as Sterling and Braylin Holman — disappeared from the Goldsboro Boating Access Area near U.S. 117 and roughly 60 miles southeast of Raleigh.

Crews responded to the area after 8 p.m. March 24 and started boat and helicopter searches, according to Wayne County spokesperson Joel Gillie.

Agencies involved in the search and recovery included Arr-Mac Water Response, Craven County Emergency Services, Foothills Search and Rescue, Goldsboro Fire Department, Goldsboro Water Rescue, Grantham Volunteer Fire Department, Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, N.C. Marine Patrol, REDS Team, Rosewood Fire Department, Seven Springs Volunteer Fire Department, Wayne County EMS, Wayne County Public School System, Wayne County Sheriff’s Office and Western Carolina University , according to authorities.
