North Carolinians are gearing up for the Super Bowl, and pizza isn’t the only food on their minds.

They’re also searching for a dip that packs a punch and mimics another game-day favorite. Buffalo chicken dip — which typically combines meat, hot sauce and other ingredients — led unique online searches in the state, data shows.

To come up with the findings, Google examined dip-related inquiries to find terms that were “over-represented in a region compared to the country,” a spokesperson told McClatchy News in a Feb. 8 email.

While North Carolina residents may be craving the buffalo chicken flavor this year, one Super Bowl report found seven-layer dip was the state’s most popular food in 2020.

Last year, Google focused on snacks instead of dips. The company’s data showed North Carolinians were looking up pigs in a blanket more than the nation as a whole ahead of the Super Bowl, McClatchy News reported.

Now, as the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals prepare to face off, North Carolina isn’t alone in its desire to find out information about buffalo chicken dip. The sauce led searches in more than a dozen states, including neighboring Tennessee, results show.

There were also some dips that stood out in only one state.

For example, crab rangoon dip led searches in Connecticut, and beer dip topped the list in Nevada. Then there was Oklahoma, where residents were curious about chocolate chip cookie dip.

In all, Google said the nationwide trends were related to game-day-related searches from January 2022.
