A kitten the “size of a tennis ball” was saved from a highway — then came more good news.

The North Carolina kitten, who now packs a lot of quirkiness to his 2-pound frame, was adopted the weekend of Aug. 16.

“Rumby climbs on top of his carrier just to yeet himself off of it,” the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Wake County wrote in a Facebook post. “Rumby knocks all the food out of his bowl and then takes a nap inside of it. Rumby licks you and then proceeds to scream at you for letting him do such a thing. It’s the Rumby way.”

The little one got a fresh start after he was found alone on a highway, the Raleigh-area SPCA told McClatchy News via email.

“He was just 4 weeks old and weighed only 10oz,” Samantha Ranlet, a shelter spokesperson, wrote in an email. “That’s pretty small for his age, so we were worried that he might have something medical going on.”

At first, the rescued kitten had trouble eating and gaining weight. But his condition improved after he got adjusted to the shelter environment and received treatment for Coccidia, a parasite that can cause intestinal infections, according to SPCA spokesperson Mady Thielemann.

As Rumby got ready for a new home, he became known as a kitten who “may or may not have been born with the consciousness of a goldfish.”

“Rumby really does stare at you unblinkingly,” Ranlet wrote. “He just sits there, with his tiny self, and his big eyes, watching you. No reaction. No blinking. The best I can sum it up is that he’s ‘no thoughts, just vibes....’ Someone chimed in our comments on Facebook to say that the only thing happening in his head was TV static. That is Rumby’s personality.”

Then on Aug. 18, the SPCA shared the heartwarming update that Rumby got a new home — with another former shelter animal.

“We were all so ecstatic for him,” Thielemann wrote. “He got lots of kisses goodbye. The person who adopted him had actually adopted a kitten from us 2 days earlier named Jaguar. He wanted to get him a BFF! So Rumby not only has a new family but a new brother his age too!”
