A vacation destination boasts a “cozy” setting — and was named the nation’s best bed and breakfast.

The C.W. Worth House in Wilmington, North Carolina, ranks No. 1 on the list from USA Today’s 10Best, according to results published Aug. 13.

And it wasn’t the only place in North Carolina to receive national recognition. Morehead Manor Bed and Breakfast in Durham landed at No. 2, and The Historic Magnolia House in Greensboro took the No. 5 spot in the rankings.

“If you’re looking to experience the charm and hospitality of a destination, staying at a bed-and-breakfast can be a great idea,” 10Best wrote in its report. “They offer a more intimate setting, where guests can get to know the hosts as well as other travelers.”

To create the list, 10Best said it asked editors and travel experts to nominate top places to stay across the country. Then, members of the public could spend a month voting on their favorites.

Why the NC bed and breakfast ranks No. 1

On the resulting list of readers’ choice award winners, the C.W. Worth House landed on top. The Wilmington destination ranked No. 4 last year but has since regained the No. 1 spot it held in 2023, McClatchy News reported.

“This Queen Anne-style bed-and-breakfast has just seven rooms, giving it a cozy, intimate feel,” 10Best wrote in its report. “Guests of C.W. Worth House enjoy a farm-to-table breakfast each morning, and the property is close enough to downtown and the Wilmington Riverwalk that you can walk to many restaurants and attractions.”

Also receiving praise for its smaller setting was Morehead Manor Bed and Breakfast. The home on Vickers Avenue in Durham offers visitors five rooms near popular attractions.

“The inn is a peaceful home base within this lively area, filled with universities and tech companies as well as restaurants, breweries, wineries, art galleries, shops, and parks,” 10Best wrote. “Gourmet breakfast and all-day snacks and beverages are included.”

Rounding out the list of fan-favorite bed and breakfasts was The Historic Magnolia House. The Greensboro destination said it was once listed in the Green Book, a guide for Black people traveling during the Jim Crow era.

“Music legends including Tina Turner, James Brown, and Ray Charles have stayed at The Historic Magnolia House, and the property’s four guest rooms feature decor inspired by past guests,” 10Best wrote.

Beyond bed and breakfasts, 10Best considered which other U.S. accommodations travelers love the most. Within those categories, the only other North Carolina winner was the Graylyn Estate in Winston-Salem, which ranked No. 2 for boutique hotels.

In the past, 10Best has told McClatchy News it doesn’t reveal the number of people who vote in its contests.
