Couple married 31 years to take honeymoon after big lottery win. ‘I was shaking’
A couple married 31 years won a life-changing lottery prize — and now, they plan to treat themselves to a long-awaited trip.
“I’m going to take a vacation with my husband that will finally be our honeymoon,” Cheryl Bach told the North Carolina Education Lottery in an Oct. 13 news release. “I haven’t decided where yet.”
Bach couldn’t stop “shaking” after she learned her lottery ticket was worth $1 million. She won big after stopping at a Harris Teeter grocery store in the Raleigh suburb Holly Springs.
While at the supermarket, Bach tried her luck on the $10 Million Spectacular scratch-off game. It turns out, her $50 ticket scored one of the game’s second-tier prizes.
“I had to put my glasses on to make sure I was seeing it right,” the lucky winner said.
Once Bach confirmed how much she won, she rushed to call her husband about the prize. But he was skeptical.
“He didn’t believe me,” the wife told lottery officials. “I had to take a picture to show him.”
Bach, who lives in Holly Springs, won’t take her winnings in annual payments. Instead, she opted for the lump sum of $600,000, leaving her with $430,514 after taxes. In addition to putting the prize money toward her honeymoon, she hopes to pay bills.
It’s not the first time a lucky lottery player has reached for their glasses. Another North Carolina winner adjusted his glasses when his ticket left him in disbelief, McClatchy News reported in September.
