Dog abandoned with cancer spent final days ‘spoiled rotten.’ See photos from SC shelter
A dog abandoned in South Carolina was given a chance a second chance in his final days living with terminal cancer.
Photos show the beloved dog — named Teddy Bear — getting pampered at a spa, meeting penguins at an aquarium and checking out the view atop the iconic SkyWheel Myrtle Beach ride.
But most of all, Teddy was a fan of the beach, where he was seen strolling along the shoreline. Less than a week after pictures of that adventure were shared on Facebook, Teddy had died, according to The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach.
“Teddy’s favorite place was the beach, and we know he’s running free along the biggest one right now,” the animal shelter wrote April 19 in a Facebook post.
The organization mourned Teddy’s loss after filling his final days with memories. For the past nine months, officials said he was “spoiled rotten” with trips to coastal landmarks — and even spent time as an honorary firefighter and police officer.
The Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach said the activities were part of a bucket list it created after realizing Teddy had terminal cancer but wasn’t in pain. He received the diagnosis after he was found bloodied, “scared and confused” in front of the shelter in July.
Soon, the 15-year-old dog found refuge at the shelter, where officials said he basked in attention and sometimes showed a sassy side.
“When people met Teddy, they often assumed he was a puppy because of how vivacious he acted,” the humane society wrote. “Teddy truly enjoyed meeting new people on a daily basis, and we take comfort in knowing he touched so many lives.”
Those included the lives of several Facebook users who encountered Teddy or followed his story online.
“We were fosters for kittens and were often in the shelter,” one person wrote. “Sweet little Teddy was always walking around like he owned the place and letting us give him pets.”
Another person commented: “Oh, Teddy, I loved following your adventures. Thank you to all who loved and cared for him.”
