AI-generated summary reviewed by our newsroom.
- Cold front moves in Sunday night into Monday; cooler temps, possible wintry mix.
- Wintry mix possible Mon–Tue, more likely in the Triad into central Virginia.
- Forecaster expects low impact; accumulation unlikely after warm weekend.
A cold front moving in late this weekend may set the stage for a potential “wintry mix” in the Triangle early next week.
“We may get anywhere from between high and dry and cold to maybe a cold rain to maybe a period of some sleet and even ending in some freezing rain,” said Aaron Swiggett, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, Friday morning. “But as least as far as Raleigh is concerned, I’d say the probability of that chance is probably pretty low.”
The cold front will move in Sunday, March 1, causing potential winter weather Monday, March 2, and into Tuesday, March 3.
It’s more likely the Triad leading up into central Virginia could see the “wintry mix,” he said.
If the Triangle does see freezing rain, sleet or ice, it’s unlikely to accumulate after a weekend of warmer temperatures, he said.
“I wouldn’t think of this as any kind of big-time impactful storm,” Swiggett said. “Worst-case scenario, it’s just a minor inconvenience. Most people may not even notice much impact from this. Now, if a colder solution develops
A warm weekend before the cold
This weekend should see warmer than normal temperatures reaching the mid-60s on Saturday, Feb. 28., and the low- to mid-70s on Sunday, March 1. That’s about 15 degrees above normal for this time of year, Swiggett said.
A cold front will move in Sunday night and into Monday, March 2, leading to a high of mid-40s with some forecasting models showing the area not getting out of the 30s, he said.
As North Carolina transitions between seasons, it’s common to see drastic temperature changes. Warm air is still moving off the Gulf of Mexico, and cold air moves in from the north.
“You can get the nice temperatures one day, but then a strong cold front settles through and it’s cloudy, rainy, drizzly or even some form of wintry mix,” Swiggett said.
