No. 16 Duke takes try No. 3 at its first win on an opponent’s home court when the Blue Devils face Boston College on Saturday at Conte Forum and will do so without a starting guard.

Junior Jeremy Roach, the team’s captain, will not play at Boston College due to a reaggravation of the toe injury that’s been bothering him since November.

The injury to the big toe on his right foot has bothered Roach since he first suffered the injury on Nov. 27 in Duke’s 75-56 loss to Purdue in the Phil Knight Legacy tournament title game at Portland. He started and played the next three games, all Duke wins, but sat out the 82-55 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Dec. 10.

The hope was extended rest would ease his discomfort but that hasn’t been the case. Roach noticeably winced and limped at one point in Duke’s 86-67 win over Florida State on Dec. 31.

His on-court production has decreased as well. Roach is 5 for 25 from the field while scoring 22 total points over Duke’s last three games after he averaged 13.7 points per game in the first three games following the initial injury.

He was 0-8 from the field when Duke suffered a humiliating 84-60 loss at N.C. State on Wednesday night that left players and coaches wondering how they could allow such a loss to occur.

That loss, coupled with an 81-70 setback at Wake Forest on Dec. 20, dropped the Blue Devils (11-4, 2-2 ACC) to 0-2 in true road games this season.

The good news for Duke is that its next game is against a team it already defeated this season. Back on Dec. 3, the Blue Devils opened ACC play at Cameron Indoor Stadium with a 75-59 win over Boston College.

That said, the Blue Devils know they have to put forth a far better effort on the Eagles’ home court than they did at PNC Arena Wednesday night, when N.C. State scored the game’s first 15 points while thoroughly pounding Duke.

Since losing to Duke in Durham, Boston College (8-7, 2-2) posted two ACC wins at home, beating Virginia Tech, 70-65, on Dec. 21 and Notre Dame, 70-63, on Tuesday night.
