No time for sentimentality: How to watch, stream Duke vs. Pittsburgh ACC basketball
While Duke welcomes an old friend back to Cameron Indoor Stadium on Wednesday night, the Blue Devils have concerns of their own that outweigh any sentimentality.
Former Duke player and assistant coach Jeff Capel brings his Pittsburgh Panthers to play Duke in a game that suddenly looms large for both teams’ hopes of finishing atop the ACC standings.
Coach Jon Scheyer’s Blue Devils (12-4, 3-2 ACC) are two games behind first-place Clemson (13-3, 5-0) in the early going. Pitt (11-5, 4-1) was tied for first until losing 75-74 at home to Clemson last Saturday.
This is Capel’s fifth season at Pitt since he left Mike Krzyzewski’s Duke staff to take over the Panthers program in 2018. He’s yet to produce a winning record, but appears to have the group to change that this season.
While unbeaten at home this season, Duke lost two ACC road games (at Wake Forest and N.C. State) before a 65-64 win at Boston College last Saturday.
The Blue Devils are expected to be without junior guard Jeremy Roach for the second game in a row. Roach, the team’s captain, suffered a toe injury in late November that has now sidelined him for two games. Scheyer and the team’s medical staff want to give him plenty of rest to get as healthy as possible for the remainder of the season.
As for the rest of the team, they gained valuable experience by making plays in the final 20 seconds to post the win at Boston College after squandering a 14-point, second-half lead.
“They’re working hard,” Scheyer said. “It’s not about where you’re at today. Trust me, I want to be as good as anybody. I want to win today. I want to win tomorrow. But it’s about where we end up and where we finish. And for our group, that’s an evolution.”
