A new title for NC State athletic director Boo Corrigan? Kind of
N.C. State Athletic Director Boo Corrigan officially has a longer job title.
The N.C. State Board of Trustees approved last week a motion offering naming rights to the position. Brian and Konni McMurray endowed the position, the athletic department announced Thursday.
The naming rights decision featured a $5 million donation requirement, with $3 million going into an endowment to support the athletic director and provide support for N.C. State athletic activities. The remaining $2 million would be “directed to an existing athletics enhancement fund designated to assist in the areas of greatest need,” according to the board of trustees agenda.
“As the chief administrator for N.C. State’s athletic programs, the Director of Athletics leads the Wolfpack’s development, strategy and management,” the agenda states. “They are responsible for 21 sports with the associated facilities, staff and programs, which all support more than 550 student-athletes.”
The naming rights would remain in place regardless of the person serving as N.C. State athletic director, though Corrigan’s current contract expires in June 2029.
“I’m so grateful to Brian and Konni for their support and for the relationship we have built since the first day I arrived on campus,” Corrigan said in a statement. “Not only have they generously supported the university in multiple ways, but they have helped the Wolfpack stay successful throughout a global pandemic and now in this ever-changing landscape of college athletics.”
Brian McMurray graduated from the N.C. State College of Textiles in 1986. He owns two North Carolina textile companies and led the creation of 15 patents, the university said. McMurray received the Distinguished Alumni award in 2022. He has been a member of the Wolfpack Club since 2013 and served as president from 2018-23.
N.C. State already offers distinguished professorships and naming rights to facilities, which honor individuals and families who provide financial support to the university, advance specific areas of study, are notable alumni or serve the university in other capacities.
William T. Kretzer is a former N.C. State basketball player, Dean’s Advisory Board member and executive in the textile industry. He is represented by the William T. Kretzer Distinguished Professor of Humanities.
Fred Kish serves as the M.C. Dean Distinguished Professor in the Department of Engineering. Carter-Finley Stadium recognizes Harry and Wilbert J. “Nick” Carter and Albert E. Finley.
The Carters provided significant financial contributions to the original stadium project, while Finley added support for expansion after the initial project.
N.C. State is not the first program to offer naming rights to athletic administration or coaching positions. Michigan, Northwestern, Notre Dame and Stanford already offer naming rights for various athletic positions, including their head football coaches.
Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman features the official title of Dick Corbett head football coach. Now-LSU head coach Brian Kelly was the Irish’s first coach with the title. Duke’s Nina King is the King-Compton Families Director of Athletics.
Stanford’s Troy Taylor has three separate titles. Taylor is the Bradford M. Freeman Director of Football, Andrew Luck Director of Offense and Kevin M. Hogan quarterbacks coach.
Bernard Muir serves as the Cardinal’s Jaquish & Kenninger Director of Athletics.
Boston College similarly endows positions within the athletic department, and Duke this week announced an endowment for the same position.
The Wolfpack is also seeking corporate naming rights opportunities for Carter-Finley Stadium as a way to generate additional cash flow.
