North Carolina football coach Bill Belichick reiterated on Tuesday that his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, does not work with the team or university.
During a news conference on campus, Belichick was asked if he expected Hudson to be on the sidelines this fall.
“No, she doesn’t have any role in the UNC football program, but, again, there has been noise out there about a lot of different things,” Belichick said in his first local media conference in Chapel Hill in more than a month.
The university said at the end of April she is not employed by the university. She is also not a contracted vendor. Last month, Belichick told Michael Strahan on Good Morning America that Hudson “does the business things that don’t relate to North Carolina that come up in my life, so I can concentrate on football.”
Belichick was also asked on Tuesday if he had known there would be so much interest in his personal life, would he have returned to college coaching or if that has taken away from the experience.
“On some of the noise that’s out there [with] the book and stuff like that, I mean, it is what it is. That’s a personal venture that I entered into when I wasn’t in coaching last year. Hopefully that’ll be a big purchase on Father’s Day,” Belichick joked.
He did not directly address the question.
Belichick said the coaching staff is focused on helping the players improve, develop positive rest and recovery habits, and do what is necessary to help the team get better.
“That’s my job. That’s our staff’s job; to put a good plan in place so if they do the work that they see the improvement,” Belichick said.
Belichick’s relationship with Hudson, 24, garnered attention after emails from the university included a request from Belichick for staff to copy her on all correspondence to him. The emails also showed Hudson instructing UNC staff on how it should handle announcements regarding assistant coaching hires — Belichick hired both of his sons — and any negative social media comments.
Hudson was seen putting a microphone on Belichick at the Tar Heels’ Practice like a Pro spring showcase and intervening during the viral CBS Sunday Morning interview. A report from sports podcaster Pablo Torre claimed Hudson was barred from Carolina facilities, but the university disputed the claim. At no time have school officials answered questions about procedures and precedence when overlap occurs nor has the university fulfilled multiple public records requests related to Belichick and Hudson.
The 73-year-old NFL Hall of Fame coach has held few media availabilities since being hired. This was the fifth time, including the ACC meetings in Florida last month, Belichick has spoken to local reporters. He previously spoke at his introductory press conference in December, at the beginning of spring practices and when the program announced it would play in Ireland next fall. He has made several other media appearances with national organizations since his introduction.
Chancellor Lee Roberts expressed support for Belichick last month at a Board of Trustees meeting, noting the start of Belichick’s tenure and increased ticket sales.
“We think Coach Belichick is off to a phenomenal start,” Roberts said. “He’s done a terrific job recruiting, both out of high school and through the transfer portal. He’s built an excellent staff. We’re excited for the season opener in Kenan Stadium on Sept. 1. He put out a statement a couple of weeks ago that I thought was cogent. I don’t have anything to add to that.”
Carolina opens its season against TCU at 8 p.m. Sept. 1 in the lone game on Labor Day.
