Bill Belichick and North Carolina football received plenty of attention before, during and after Belichick’s college head coaching debut on Monday against TCU. The spotlight, however, included more than the product on the field.

Belichick’s 24-year-old girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, also garnered plenty of attention.

The duo entered into a relationship before Belichick, 73, took the UNC coaching job, but it has sparked speculation, criticism and scrutiny regarding her role with the program this year.

Once again, her appearance at the home opener reignited questions and conjecture, despite her activities on Monday being normal for a coach’s partner or other exclusive guest.

During pregame warmups, Hudson was on the sideline alongside UNC football communications official Brandon Faber.

She sported a white tank top and blue sparkly bell-bottoms and, like fans were required to do, carried a clear plastic purse. She wore on an all-access credential with her outfit. Videos show her briefly speaking with Belichick during the pregame activities, as well.

Some users on social media pointed to her credential and brief interaction to indicate she has an official role with the football team, something the university has repeatedly denied. All-access passes can be given to anyone, not just employees, the program deems appropriate to enter exclusive spaces, including the field and other team facilities.

University officials, recruits, scouts and special guests may be given all-access passes at the team’s discretion.

Additionally, it is not uncommon for visitors of any team to briefly speak with members of the coaching staff during the warmup period.

Some reports and posts online say Hudson remained on the sideline during the game. That is not true. After warmups, Hudson joined a suite with familiar faces, including former NFL star Randy Moss. TV cameras caught her celebrating a big run by Caleb Hood in the first quarter from a suite.

Other staff wives also watched the game from their respective suites. Anastasia Mattes, wife of UNC football chief of staff Chris Mattes, and Jennifer Belichick, wife of defensive coordinator Steve Belichick and Bill Belichick’s daughter in law, were both spotted in suites.

After the game, Hudson was seen in the Kenan Football Center, waiting behind glass doors to greet Belichick after his postgame press conference. She stayed out of the main lobby where the reporters gathered, maintaining a low profile.

If any of this sounds familiar, it should: it’s a similar playbook followed by many college coaches’ spouses and partners. It was not uncommon to see former North Carolina coach Mack Brown walking off the field hand-in-hand with his wife, Sally. She was a fixture around the football complex, from the team cafeterias to practices.

Sara Doeren, wife of N.C. State football coach Dave Doeren, has also attended his postgame press conferences or left the field with him after games. The same is true for Duke football coach Manny Diaz’ wife, Stephanie.

Hudson was spotted on the field during UNC’s spring showcase and reports indicated her involvement with the now-canceled HBO “Hard Knocks” series. Belichick’s requests to copy her on university emails, and requests related to coaching staff announcements and social media commentary have also drawn criticism.

A clip from Belichick’s CBS Sunday Morning interview also went viral in April, which led to additional investigations into her involvement at UNC. Pablo Torre reported in May that Hudson was banned from the facilities, but the university denied the claim. She was spotted off to the side at several football practices before the season began.

Hudson, though being a focus this week again, did not do anything out of the ordinary Monday.
