  • UNC and Hulu abandon in-season documentary collaboration amid program turmoil
  • Belichick’s Tar Heels sit 2-3 with zero Power Four wins in 2025
  • UNC social media faced posting directives after Drake Maye’s NFL success

UNC football is no longer moving forward with the in-season documentary planned with Hulu and EverWonder Studio, sources confirmed to The News & Observer on Tuesday. The news was first reported by Inside Carolina.

North Carolina announced the collaboration on their social media accounts in August. This came after a deal with HBO’s “Hard Knocks” — a done deal per NFL insiders — fell apart in March after lengthy negotiations between NFL Films and UNC as reported by The Athletic. The same report cited the desired involvement in the production from Jordon Hudson, Belichick’s girlfriend, as one of the reasons for the deal falling apart.

“This is about the UNC football program,” North Carolina coach Bill Belichick said in the August video announcing the partnership with Hulu. “There’s obviously a lot of interest in it… it’s going to feature the players working hard, like you guys do. It’s about the players improving.”

The Hulu/EverWonder camera crew was a fixture around the program for much of the early season. The group — complete with producers, large boom mics and camera operators — was present at UNC’s first three games, several press conferences and even Belichick’s August appearance at Top of the Hill for the North Carolina football’s radio show.

But the crew was notably absent on Saturday, when the Tar Heels lost, 38-10, to Clemson. North Carolina has struggled so far under Belichick, with a 2-3 start to the season and no Power 4 wins. The Tar Heels have been outscored 120-33 against P4 opponents.

The latest news regarding the planned Hulu docuseries is part of what’s already been a busy news cycle for UNC football and Belichick this week.

Monday morning, CBS Sports/247Sports reported UNC football’s social media team was directed not to post or repost Patriots-related items. This news came after former Tar Heel quarterback Drake Maye led New England to a primetime win over the previously undefeated Buffalo Bills on Sunday night.

Multiple sources close to the program declined to comment to the N&O on the alleged social media directive. Later on Monday morning, after social media backfire, UNC football’s official X (formerly Twitter) account posted a Maye highlight clip.

Monday night, the same day as the social media controversy, WRAL reported Tar Heel quarterback Gio Lopez was involved in a car crash and taken to the hospital days before UNC’s season-opening 48-14 loss to TCU.

Tuesday night, the Athletic reported a coach on Belichick’s staff has been suspended amid allegations he provided impermissible benefits to a player’s family.

North Carolina returns to action against Cal with a 10:30 p.m. kickoff on Friday, Oct. 17.
