Update: Chance of snow remains, but a shift in where it may fall in NC
What may be the swan song for winter weather in North Carolina is expected to arrive today, but the forecast has changed some over the past day.
Rain is expected to change over to a wintry mix with snow and sleet across the northern Piedmont and Coastal Plain as a low pressure system meets cool air Saturday evening, according to the National Weather Service.
Friday's forecast showed the snowfall stretching from the Triad to the northern Triangle and east to the Interstate 95 corridor, and up to 2 inches of snow in the northernmost counties.
The Saturday morning briefing from the weather service reflected a slight nudge to the north, more closely matching the forecast from Thursday. It also called for an inch or less of wet, slushy snow accumulation — mostly on grassy, elevated surfaces along and north of the I-85 corridor.
Snow mixed with rain is possible as far south as U.S. 64 in central North Carolina and north of U.S. 264 in the eastern part of the state, but shouldn't stick, the update said.
Snow and sleet could begin earlier in the northwestern counties, starting Saturday afternoon, according to the weather service.
Freezing rain may also be possible in some areas from 5-9 a.m. Sunday.
Ground temperatures, however, should remain slightly above freezing, causing little to no impact on travel, the weather service said.
