3 guards hurt by inmate in assault at Central Prison, state officials report

Three correction officers at Central Prison and a prison inmate were hurt Monday night when the inmate assaulted them, the state Department of Public Safety said.

Initial reports from officials said, “Two employees and one inmate were treated by prison medical staff, then transported to local hospitals for care."

Tuesday, however, a more complete report of the incident showed that three officers were hurt, Keith Acree, a spokesman with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, said.

The guards and the inmate were treated for their injuries and released, Acree said. He said the incident happened about 11 p.m.

The inmate “assaulted” the officers by “punching/fighting,” Acree said.

The inmate’s name was not disclosed. He was taken back to the prison after being released from the hospital, Acree said.
