Police were investigating a Monday night homicide that they said took the life of Kevin David Powell, 21 of Durham.

Officers found Powell dead and with multiple gunshot wounds when they answered a call about shots having been fired in the 1100 block of Linwood Avenue about 8:45 p.m., a spokesman said.

He said detectives did not believe it was a random shooting and it appeared Powell had been targeted.

State probation officers were looking for Powell because he had been declared an absconder. He was given two years’ probation March 23 after being convicted of having a gun in 2014 that had its serial number filed off, a felony.

Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator J. Mitchell at 919-560-4440 or CrimeStoppers at 919-683-1200. CrimeStoppers pays cash rewards for information leading to arrests in felony cases, and callers never have to identify themselves.
