Secretary of State Elaine Marshall announced Thursday that she was married in a ceremony Saturday in Raleigh to Jesse Thomas “Tommy” Bunn, a retired tobacco cooperative executive.

Marshall, 71, is the first woman elected to statewide office in North Carolina and the longest-serving member of the Council of State. She was the Democratic nominee for U.S. senator in the 2010 election, but lost to Republican Richard Burr.

Until recently, Bunn, 73, was president of the U.S. Tobacco Cooperative, a multistate grower-owned marketing operation based in Raleigh.

Marshall’s two previous husbands died as a result of cancer. Bunn is also a widower.

She graduated from the University of Maryland and earned a law degree from Campbell University. He attended Louisburg College and graduated from N.C. State University.
