Interstate wreck in Orange County kills Durham man, closes lanes for hours
A Durham man died Sunday evening after he was thrown from an SUV in a wreck where eastbound Interstate 40 splits and northbound I-85 split in Orange County, and two others were hospitalized, state troopers reported.
Cameron Anthony Bass, 21, was not wearing a seat belt and died after he was thrown from the Ford Explorer, the State Highway Patrol said.
Troopers said rainy weather may have been part of the reason that Hayley Danielle Brown, 21, of Hillsborough lost control of the Explorer while it was in the I-85 lanes going toward Durham.
The vehicle went off the pavement, rolled and wound up in the eastbound I-40 lanes, a highway patrol spokesman said.
A backseat passenger, Anthony Michael Coley, 21, of Mebane, was hurt, and he and Brown were taken to Duke University Hospital, the spokesman said.
Traffic going east on I-40 was diverted onto northbound I-85 for several hours after the wreck, which troopers said happened shortly after 6 p.m.
