Troopers looking for explanation of wrong-way I-540 crash that killed 2

The State Highway Patrol was trying Monday to determine what set the stage for a head-on crash on Interstate 540 that killed two people early Sunday.

Troopers said a Mazda was going east in the interstate’s westbound lanes and smashed into a Kia that was going the right way shortly before 3 a.m.

It happened a little ways west of I-540’s interchange with Creedmoor Road, which is N.C. 50, Sgt. Michael Baker, a Highway Patrol spokesman said.

Kevin Marcel Dunkin was driving the Mazda that was going the wrong way, and Naisha Virginia Boneque was driving the Kia, Baker said.

Both drivers died at the scene.
