VA woman killed in I-40 crash; Morrisville, Durham women injured

A woman from Virginia died and her husband and two area residents, including an 83-year-old woman, were hurt when the car in which they were passengers ran off Interstate 40 on Sunday morning and a hit a tree, police said Monday.

The wreck happened on the eastbound side of the highway three-quarters of a mile past the Harrison Avenue exit at about 10:15 a.m., a police report said.

Patricia Scott Morgan, 49, of Amelia Court House, Va., died in the crash. Police said she was a passenger in the right-front seat of the 2016 Subaru SUV.

Anne McArthur Morgan, 83, of Morrisville and Mary Deanne Morgan, 55, of Durham were backseat passengers, police said.

Samuel Michael Morgan, 52, of Amelia Court House was driving, police said.

Tuesday, Samuel Morgan was reported in fair condition, Anne Morgan in critical condition and Mary Morgan in good condition, all at WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh.

According to police, the Subaru was traveling in the far right lane of I-40, went off the right side of the road and went about 200 feet before hitting a tree.

The report did not say if police had determined why the car left the road.
