Police say man struck by truck on Raleigh’s Hillsborough Street may have been drinking

Police say an inebriated man standing in a traffic median on Hillsborough Street near N.C. State’s campus asked someone across the street for the time of day and then stepped into the path of an oncoming truck.

Michael Anthony Koward, 53, of Raleigh ended atop a trailer the truck was pulling after he was struck and then fell to the ground when the truck stopped, according to an accident report released by the Raleigh Police Department.

Emergency workers rushed Koward to WakeMed, where he was treated for injuries not considered life threatening, according to the accident report.

Police have not filed charges against the driver of the truck, John Jay Magdefrau, 51, of Raleigh, according to the accident report. Investigators think Koward was impaired by alcohol or another intoxicating substance, according to the report

The accident happened just after 2:30 p.m. on Hillsborough near Pogue and Horne streets, police reported. Police temporarily closed that section of Hillsborough after the accident.
