Did we learn anything from Katrina?

10 years ago today, Katrina made landfall in Florida as a category 1 hurricane. Her winds measured 85 mph with gusts up to 97 mph. She passed directly over the National Hurricane Center and crossed the Everglades, moving into the Gulf of Mexico temporarily weakened after her passage over southern Florida.

Why isn't the Southeast warming as fast as the rest of the Earth?

The Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society's annual State of the Climate report was released earlier this month, and just like last year, it concluded that the earth continues its overall warming trend. Also, similar to last year, one might notice that the eastern United States may be warming, but is warming at a slower pace than most other regions of the world. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the western part of the country is consistently warmer than normal and setting records. Why is that?

Hurricane predictions in 2005 revisited 10 years later

Do you remember the record breaking Atlantic Hurricane season of 2005? Unless you were too young to be paying attention, it should ring a bell. We had 29 named storms including Dennis, Irene, Katrina, Rita, Wilma, and a few Greek letter names since we ran out of our own alphabet. It was a bad year for people on the coasts from Central America up to New England.
