Has the potential sale of the Carolina Hurricanes hit a snag?
Negotiations between Carolina Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos Jr. and a group headed by Chuck Greenberg over the sale of the NHL team apparently have hit a snag.
While the process has become more complicated, as one person close to the negotiations said Thursday, the same source said the two sides have “not turned their backs on each other.”
Karmanos and the Greenberg group have been in negotiations for months, and Karmanos has said the asking price would be between $450 million and $500 million. In an interview in August, Karmanos expressed some concern that negotiations with the Greenberg group were not progressing quicker.
Karmanos said in the interview that a term sheet was in place with the investment group headed by Greenberg, a sports attorney, former CEO of the Texas Rangers and minor-league baseball owner. But Karmanos said there was no purchase agreement and said there had been other potential investors who inquired about the team that Karmanos first bought in 1994 and moved to North Carolina in 1997.
Greenberg has made several trips to the Triangle and North Carolina in the past few months, conferring with potential investors.
Greenberg declined to comment Thursday.
