Canes open season with 6 road games
The Carolina Hurricanes will open the 2016-17 season with six road games, it was announced Tuesday as the NHL schedule was released.
The Canes will play their season opener Oct. 13 at Winnipeg and continue on a Western Canada road swing with games at Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary. The six-game road trip will conclude with games against the Philadelphia Flyers and Detroit Red Wings.
The Canes announced Monday that they would play their home opener Oct. 28 against the New York Rangers. After hosting the Flyers on Oct. 30, the Canes will play at Ottawa and Nashville – in all, eight of the first 10 games away from Raleigh.
The Canes will play seven games at PNC Arena in November, including five straight from Nov. 10-20. December will feature another seven home games, including visits from the Tampa Bay Lightning (Dec. 4), Washington Capitals (Dec. 16), Detroit Red Wings (Dec. 19), Boston Bruins (Dec. 23) and Chicago Blackhawks (Dec. 30).
The Hurricanes will host five Metropolitan Division opponents to PNC Arena in January 2017, including the 2016 Stanley Cup-winning Pittsburgh Penguins on Jan. 20.
Carolina has 18 home games in February, March and April following the NHL All-Star break, with the regular-season home game on April 8 against St. Louis. The Canes end the season April 9 at Philadelphia.
Of the Hurricanes’ 41 home games, 26 will be played on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays. The team will play 16 sets of back-to-back games, matching the number it played in each of the last two seasons.
The Canes will have 11 home games played on Fridays and will have a 7:30 p.m. starting time for those games rather than the usual 7 p.m. start. The team the extra half-hour would allow fans to finish up their work week before heading to the games.
The NHL will have a later-than-usual start to the season because of the World Cup of Hockey, to be played Sept. 17-Oct. 1 in Toronto. The Canes also do not schedule home games during the N.C. State Fair, which is set for Oct. 13-23.
It will be the second straight season the Canes opened the season on the road. Carolina lost 2-1 to the Nashville Predators last season.
The Canes were 4-4 in their first eight road games in 2015-16, going 4-3 on a seven-game trip during the State Fair.
