A popular drive-thru-only coffee chain is opening its first Wake County store this year.

Scooter’s Coffee, which was established in Nebraska in 1998 as “Scooter’s Java Express,” is building a new location in Rolesville.

This will be the latest store to open in the Triangle, joining locations in Durham and Clayton. It is expected to open in late fall 2025, the company told The News & Observer in a social media message.

As of November 2024, there were more than 800 Scooter’s Coffee stores across 30 states.

The approximately 700-square-foot building is under construction at 306 S. Main St., next to Sonic and across from Rolesville Elementary School.

It will be nearby two other coffee shops. Coffee Lodge is just on the other side of Rogers Road, and Prima Cafe will open in the Cobblestone Village development near Main and Young streets.

What’s on the menu at Scooter’s?

Scooter’s serves a range of hot, blended and iced drinks. Its specialty is the Caramelicious, which includes espresso, milk and caramel sauce.

Drinks can be customized with added flavors, including some sugar-free options and milk alternatives. The store also has teas and smoothies.

Food choices include sweet and savory items, such as cookies, cinnamon rolls, muffins, burritos and omelet bites.

The coffee shop’s name reflects its mission to “keep customers happy by helping them ‘scoot in and scoot out’ quickly,” the Scooter’s website says.

The smiley face graphic that now decorates drinks and Scooter’s stores comes from a tradition started by company co-founder Linda Eckles, who in 1998 began placing happy face stickers on every drink she sold, the coffee shop’s website says.

What else is opening in Rolesville?

Two other developments are taking shape in Rolesville, The News & Observer has previously reported.

Cobblestone Village, a mixed-use project that includes multifamily living, retail and restaurants is filling with tenants. The local Indian restaurant chain Lime & Lemon and other locally owned businesses such as Artisan Beer & Cheese, Pixels Bar + Arcade and Local Charm Boutique are opening there.

A Publix-anchored shopping center called Wallbrook recently announced nearly a dozen new retailers, including Five Guys, El Jefe Modern Mexican, Jersey Mike’s, Fifth Third Bank, Verizon and Great Clips. Wallbrook will be located at South Main Street and Jonesville Road. When complete, it will include medical and professional offices and 140 townhomes, in addition to retail and restaurants.
