A manufacturer that describes itself as the “largest label company in the world” — making labels for Moderna, Merck and other pharmaceutical companies — will construct a $33.8 million facility in Fuquay-Varina.

The town announced Wednesday it had finalized plans to sell a 32.3-acre site at 1599 Dash Drive to CCL Label Inc. for a 110,000-square-foot manufacturing facility. CCL Label is a subsidiary of CCL Industries, which operates 192 production centers and employs more than 22,000 people across 40 countries.

The company makes labels for several major products, including Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine, according to David Laverde, the company’s director of design and construction worldwide.

“We also do Bayer labels, Tylenol, DayQuil, all those type of labels,” Laverde told The News & Observer. “So, some of those will be coming out of (Fuquay-Varina). We also work with Merck and all the major pharmaceutical groups. And when you open up a prescription, that little booklet that you open up that’s got all the information, those will be done out of there as well.”

Construction of the new manufacturing site is expected to begin in the spring of 2022 and finish by December 2023. The facility will employ 150 people earning $70,000 on average.

“We look forward to starting operations on our new site in Fuquay-Varina in proximity to our customers who are in the pharmaceutical and medical device production industry,” Laverde said in a press release. “A good talent pool we can draw from, existing infrastructure and great cooperation from the Town of Fuquay-Varina was decisive in making our sizable investment decision. We aim to build a world-class label manufacturing site and provide customers the best supply chain solutions for their needs.”

CCL qualifies to receive up to $750,000 of economic development funding assistance as part of an incentives package approved by the Fuquay-Varina board of commissioners on Tuesday. The money will be paid after $29 million of anticipated capital expenditures have been completed.
