Soon, Johnston County shoppers won’t have to leave the county to visit a Target.

It has been years since news broke that the Minneapolis-based retailer was planning to open its first store in the county. But shoppers only have to wait a couple of more weeks to visit, according to Target.

Located in Selma, Target will be an anchor tenant at the Eastfield development, a mixed-use project that has been welcoming new retailers and restaurants for months.

Target’s new, nearly 129,000-square-foot store will employ around 140 people.

It’s scheduled to open Sunday, May 17 at 551 St. Mark Ave. in Selma. Regular store hours will be 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday-Sunday.

Inside, the store will have an Apple at Target, CVS Pharmacy and Starbucks Café. Its food department is located in the back of the building.

Shoppers can take advantage of services such as Drive Up, Order Pickup and same-day delivery.

Johnston County’s population was estimated around 256,450 in 2025, according to the U.S. Census. Around 7,200 people lived in Selma as of July 2024, the U.S. Census estimated.

New Target stores in North Carolina

The Selma store, and one in Myrtle Grove, which also opens May 17, are Target’s 56th and 57th locations in North Carolina. The state’s first Target arrived in 1994.

These openings come just months after Target opened its latest North Carolina store in Fuquay-Varina. It is the town’s first and only Target, and notably, it was the retailer’s 2,000th store.

Target has previously announced new stores in Mebane, Lincolnton and Fayetteville. It will also be an anchor tenant for a forthcoming development in Durham.

Nationwide, Target plans to open 30 stores and remodel 130 in 2026. Four other stores in Arizona, Missouri and New Jersey are expected to open May 17.

New businesses at Eastfield in Selma

Target’s opening marks the latest for the filling, 435-acre Eastfield development.

It’s one of the largest retailers to join the shopping center. BJ’s Wholesale Club opened its store there in January.

The development also has many big box stores, such as Academy Sports + Outdoors, Hobby Lobby, Old Navy, Ulta Beauty and Five Below.

Several chain restaurants have also expanded to Eastfield, among them LongHorn Steakhouse, Olive Garden and Chick-fil-A.
