Target bought the land at 12487 Clayton Blvd., also known as U.S. Highway 70 Business. The area is a roughly half-mile drive from a Walmart and other retailers.
“Casto closed on approximately 90 acres in Clayton for our West Edge development, and Target closed on 11 acres,” Shannon Dixon, executive vice president of development and leasing for Casto, told The News & Observer in a Wednesday, June 17 email. “We don’t have other tenants or a timeline to announce just yet, but we’ll share more as we’re able.”
Target doesn’t include the Clayton location on its online list of future stores. In response to The N&O’s request for additional information about the Johnston County real-estate deal, Target spokesperson Enoma Owens said the company is “continuously exploring possible locations for future stores, but we have no new stores news to share....”
“As we get closer to opening the store, we’ll have more specific details to share — including how the shopping experience will be tailored to serve local guests and the grand opening date,” Owens wrote in an email to The N&O.
The land purchase comes as Target recently has expanded in the Triangle.
Last month, Target opened its first Johnston County location on St. Mark Avenue in Selma. And in March, a store started welcoming customers on Gold Ring Road in Fuquay-Varina, The N&O previously reported.
Target also has stores in Apex, Cary, Chapel Hill, Durham, Garner, Holly Springs, Knightdale, Morrisville, Raleigh and Wake Forest.
New development in Clayton
Casto paid over $23 million for the West Edge development property, a company spokesperson told The N&O in a Thursday, June 18 email. A map posted online shows the shopping center could have space for three anchor stores and several other businesses.
“Clayton is a fantastic suburb of Raleigh, and it really checks all the boxes,” Dixon wrote. “You’ve got a strong, growing population, great traffic counts, and terrific demographics, with plenty of people in the area during the day, whether they live there, work there, or are passing through.”
