In addition to the Cary’s unusual arrangement with its police chief that allows the use of a vehicle to travel to a home in Lincoln County, the town’s chief is also the second highest paid in the Triangle.
Cary Police Chief Terry Sult earns a salary of $250,016, second only to Raleigh’s police chief, Rico Boyce, who earns $256,150.
Raleigh’s population, almost 500,000, is about 2.7 times that of Cary.
Durham’s outgoing chief, Patrice Andrews, is paid an annual salary of $233,437. The city’s population is just over 300,000. She is retiring May 1.
Of course, population is not the only factor that determines the salary of a city or town’s police chief — cost of living, experience, staffing and budgets also contribute.
